- Samburu National
Reserve:
- Samburu Game Reserve is
situated in the hot and arid fringes of Kenya's vast
Northern Frontier District. The area is home to the
Samburu tribe, pastoral relatives of the Masai. The
landscape is rugged and dramatic - against a backdrop of
volcanic mountains, gaunt hills and withered scrub tree
punctuate the sparse and dry terrain with clusters of the
incredibly hardy desert rose providing the occasional
flash of vivid colour. The Ewaso Nyiro river, lifeline of
the area, runs along the southern boundary dividing
Samburu Game Reserve from Buffalo Springs Reserve.
Crocodile and hippo share the river with the many small
herds of elephant which bathe and frolic in the muddy
brown waters during the heat of the day before returning
later to browse on the lush vegetation of the riverine
forest. Buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah and plains game
may also be seen but a special feature of this Reserve are
the various species of game unique to these northern parks
- Beisa oryx, the long necked gerenuk, Grevy's zebra,
reticulated giraffe and the blue shanked Somali
ostrich. Samburu Reserve covers an area of 104 km2 on the
northern bank of Uaso Nyiro river. Samburu Game Reserve
has a unique landscapes of rounded and rugged hills and
undulating plains.

Aberdare National
Park:
- The Aberdare National
Park was created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes
and moors of the Aberdare Mountains. While the park has
elephant, lion, rhino, black leopard and the beautiful but
elusive bongo antelope, it is rarely visited by safari
companies and individual travellers. There are a number of
reasons for this, one is that the high rainfall turns the
roads to mudslides and you need a 4x4 to get anywhere, and
as a result the park often closes in the wet season. Added
to this is the dense forest, which makes game viewing
tricky. Lastly, other than campsites with minimal
facilities, the only accommodation is at two very
expensive tree lodges.
The lodges are also the main attraction of the Aberdare.
Both Treetops and The Ark are built above the ground
beside floodlit waterholes with salt licks. Visitors must
book in advance and cannot make their own way to the
lodges in private vehicles. Instead check-in is at the
Aberdare Country club for The Ark and the Outspan Hotel
for Treetops and they bus you to the lodge. Treetops is
one of Kenya's most famous hotels as this is where British
Princess Elizabeth was informed that she was now Queen in
1952 when her father died. The Ark, however, offers better
game viewing, especially at night.
Nocturnal game viewing is taken so seriously that there is
a buzzer in each room which
sounds if an unusual animal
turns up at the waterhole. Elephant, buffalo, rhino,
leopard and bushbuck are regular visitors. Kenya Safari to Kenya Lodge

Samburu Serena Safari Lodge:
Situated on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro
River, in the center of the Samburu Game Reserve, the
Samburu Serena Safari Lodge echoes the robust rhythms of
African riverfront life. The lodge was inspired by the
architecture of the indigenous Samburu tribe; it blends
into its natural environment by making full use of native
materials. Thatched cabins built using exotic African
woods create an escapist atmosphere. Accommodations are
cooled by breezes off the river and overhead punkah fans.
All guestrooms have private verandahs with uninterrupted
vistas of the languid river and the wildlife it attracts,
as well as the countless crocodiles that make the waters
their home. Gracious dining and lounge areas are enhanced
by Samburu details and murals depicting local nature. The
Samburu dancers will entertain you during one of your days
here, and it might even be possible to visit one of their
