2 Days Aberdare
Lodge Safari staying at Tree Hotel Safaris, The Ark Lodge,
Treetops Lodge Aberdare, Serena Mountain Lodge, Kenya lodge
safari
Aberdare National
Park:
The Aberdare National
Park was created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes
and moors of the Aberdare Mountains. While the park has
elephant, lion, rhino, black leopard and the beautiful but
elusive bongo antelope, it is rarely visited by safari
companies and individual travellers. There are a number of
reasons for this, one is that the high rainfall turns the
roads to mudslides and you need a 4x4 to get anywhere, and
as a result the park often closes in the wet season. Added
to this is the dense forest, which makes game viewing
tricky. Lastly, other than campsites with minimal
facilities, the only accommodation is at two very
expensive tree lodges.
The lodges are also the main attraction of the Aberdares.
Both Treetops and The Ark are built above the ground
beside floodlit waterholes with salt licks. Visitors must
book in advance and cannot make their own way to the
lodges in private vehicles. Instead check-in is at the
Aberdare Country club for The Ark and the Outspan Hotel
for Treetops and they bus you to the lodge. Treetops is
one of Kenya's most famous hotels as this is where British
Princess Elizabeth was informed that she was now Queen in
1952 when her father died. The Ark, however, offers better
game viewing, especially at night.
Nocturnal game viewing is taken so seriously that there is
a buzzer in each room which sounds if an unusual animal
turns up at the waterhole. Elephant, buffalo, rhino,
leopard and bushbuck are regular visitors.
2 Aberdare Lodge Safari:
Day 1:
Nairobi
to Aberdare National Park, Kenya

Cross the Kenyan Highlands, through pineapple and coffee
plantations, to your "base hotel" in time for lunch
at Aberdare
Country Club. Afternoon transfer into Aberdare National Park and on to The Ark Lodge for bird
watching and overnight floodlit game viewing from the
lodge viewing decks. Ark Lodge, set in the heart of the
Aberdare National Park, is an unique tree lodge with a
veranda that overlooks a floodlit waterhole and saltlick
allowing undisturbed views of wildlife visiting the
waterhole. Elephant, rhino, leopard, bushbuck and
occasionally an elusive bongo and giant forest hog have
been sighted. The 60 guest rooms are all en-suite. All
cabins have private bathrooms with shower, and are
comfortably furnished with bedside lamps and carpeted
floors to ward off the evening and morning chill.
Resembling and named after Noah's Ark, The Ark Tree Lodge
is designed with 'decks' from which numerous balconies
and lounges provide superb vantage points for game
viewing. A ground level bunker provides excellent
photographic opportunities and takes you closer than you
would believe possible to the wildlife. Dinner and

Treetops Lodge:
Famously known
for being home to Queen Elizabeth the II on the night of
her crowning, Treetops Hotel offers guests a royal treat
in the heart of the Aberdare National Park. No trip to
Kenya is regarded as complete without a visit or stay at
the Treetops Hotel. Treetops heads the list for many a
visitor. Located in the heart of the dense lichen hung
forest, the 50 room Treetops overlooks two waterholes and
the snowy peaks of Mount Kenya.
You can take pleasure in the safety and comfort of
observation lounges, which allow you to photograph the
territorial charge of rhino, protective matriarch elephant
and bounding bushbuck. A family of lions, have on more
than one occasion, made a meal of some poor unfortunate
warthog to the fascinated horror of Treetops guests. Rooms
are either single or twin with shared bathroom facilities,
however, private on suite bathrooms are available on
request. A professional hunter can also wake you up on
request when one of the "Big Five" visits the tree house

Kenya, Serena Mountain Lodge offers game viewing
opportunities while combining a glorious panorama of

mountain and secreted deep within her largest forest
reserve, the lodge offers the clarity of mountain air, the
tranquility of the forest, a colorful cavalcade of
wildlife, and the chance of scaling the icy peaks of
