AAH 801: 8 Days Classic Kenya Safari

The tour visits Amboseli, Mount Kenya, Lake Nakuru and finally Maasai Mara Game Reserve before returning to Nairobi where the safari ends.

 
Day 1: Arrival - Nairobi
Arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Met and assisted. Transfer to your overnight city hotel on Bed and breakfast basis, Nairobi Serena Hotel or Nairobi Safari Club.

Day 2: Nairobi - Amboseli National Park
After breakfast drive to Amboseli National Park arriving in good time for lunch. Amboseli National Park provides the classic Hollywood image of Africa. Set in rolling savannah scenery it is dwarfed by the presence of the pink-tinged, snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro which, at 5,896 meters, is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Against this magnificent backdrop roam vast herds of elephant accompanied by lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, baboon, gazelle hippo and wildebeest. There are also over 400 species of birds, all manner of reptilian, flora and fauna and some of the most soul-searing views in Africa. Day 3: Amboseli National Park

Day 4: Amboseli - Mount Kenya National Park
After an early breakfast, depart to Mount Kenya via Nairobi. Arrive at Mountain Lodge Serena for lunch. Afternoon leisure game viewing from the lodge as animals come to drink at the lodge's floodlit waterhole. Day 5: Mount Kenya - Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast depart to Lake Nakuru National Park to arrive in good time for lunch at your Sarova Lion Hill. Set on a plateau in an elevation above Lake Nakuru , Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge has 67 chalets all overlooking the lake, within the Lake Nakuru National Park . Day 6: Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara
Drive to Masai Mara Game Reserve arriving in time for lunch. Amboseli National Park:

Amboseli National Reserve (Formerly Amboseli National Park) is a place of stark contrast. Meaning a "place of water" in Maasai, Amboseli despite its sometimes dry and dusty appearance, has an endless water supply filtered through thousands of feet of volcanic rock from Kilimanjaro snow melt. These underground streams converge into two clear water springs in the heart of the park.

The endemic dust is volcanic ash which spewed from Kilimanjaro a millennia ago. During the dry seasons, a curious feature is the shimmering dry lake bed where false mirages of populated horizons, punctuated by real herds of zebras and wildebeests hover in front of visitors. The principal attraction in Amboseli National Reserve is its vast herds of elephants within the park. The bull elephants here have some of the largest tusks in Kenya. Plentiful game includes: zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala and leopard. Caracal and African serval cat can be seen. Birdwatchers can see pelicans, bee-eaters, kingfishers, African fish eagles, martial eagles and pygmy falcons.

Amboseli National Reserve is an important rangeland in Maasai culture. The ranch areas outside the park offer a wealth of game viewing and walking safaris. The Kenya Wildlife Community Service works closely with the local elders to develop eco-tourism attractions which benefit the indigenous communities and protect this fragile eco-system.

Climate:
The climate is mainly hot and dry. Amboseli National Park is in the rain shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The maximum average temperature of the warmest month is 33°C during the day, while that of the coldest is 27-28°C. An annual rainfall of 300mm per annum is distributed in two seasons: April/May and November/December.
